April 15th 2011 – It Happened!

Friday. I got up, threw on my gym clothes, ate a waffle and drove my boyfriend to BART. He jumped out of the car and gave me a kiss and told me he would see me at 5 for our “hot date”. Then, off he went to work…

It was a normal morning. I was pretty sure it was going to be a normal day too. I had a great workout, went out to lunch with my grandpa and took him to a few appointments and the rest of the afternoon was spent editing pictures. When 4pm rolled around I turned off the computer and started to get ready for my date. I was excited! Scott and I have been SO busy lately and date night was loooong overdue.

I jumped on BART and headed into San Francisco. I met up with Scott who was waiting for me when I got off the train. He said he had planned for us to head over to North Beach and we could walk around and pick a restaurant to eat dinner at. North Beach is one of our favorite neighborhoods to walk around. It’s always known as Little Italy. There’s delicious food, fun bars (one of our favorite wine bars is located there) and it’s just a fun spot in the city.

We took a cab over to North Beach and walked around the streets trying to decide on where we wanted to eat. Trust me, it is a tough decision! We finally decided to go to the restaurant Rose Pistola. We had never been before and we really wanted to try something new! As we were waiting I saw two of our best friends, Cheryl and Jason, seated by a window having what looked like a date night for themselves too! I of course ran over to say HI really fast. They were surprised to see me! They said they were having a date night and I said Scott and I were doing the same. We chit-chatted for a second and then I left them so they could enjoy their romantic dinner.

We were seated near the back of the restaurant where there weren’t many people around. We sat across from each other at a two person table. I remember thinking how nice it was to be out in my favorite city with my favorite man! The waiter came over and Scott promptly ordered a bottle of Prosecco. I was like, really? Don’t we usually get wine? He came back with the smooth comment, “yes, but I know you like Prosecco so I thought we would go with that”. I was fine with that answer. I mean, after all, I DO enjoy myself some Prosecco!

Our drinks came and we ordered our dinner. We were just chatting it up like we always do – just talking about life and what the future holds. He then said, “maybe we should pick a wedding date?” (side note – we talk about wedding dates often. We have been dating for 4 1/2 years and pretty much knew without a doubt we would eventually be getting married so this wasn’t an uncommon subject to bring up). He asked the question and my response was my typical response. I held up my right hand and pointed to my ring finger and said, “I don’t see a ring on this finger!”. He said, “well maybe if you close your eyes and wish really hard one will just appear!”. Of course, I did just that! I jokingly closed my eyes really tight and I may or may not have crossed my fingers. When I opened my eyes, there sitting on the table right in front of me was a little black box.

*Insert jaw drop*

I was shocked!! I was speechless!! He had the biggest smile on his face…

And then I said IT’S ABOUT TIME! hahaha

I cannot believe I didn’t see it coming. I was honest-to-goodness shocked and surprised! He pulled it off! And here I thought I would have it all figured out and I would see “signs” of when it was about to happen. NO WAY! He was so calm and never suspected anything! Now, after I said yes he did end up telling me he had been SO nervous all day. But, you totally couldn’t tell. He’s good…

The waiter brought our food over shortly after. I went from starving to not hungry at all in just a few seconds. I was THAT excited and probably still in shock. Scott told the waited right away that he just proposed to me and I said yes! Yay! So, the waiter was the first person I got to show my ring off too! hehe

Over dinner we were talking about who we were going to call afterwards. He said just about everyone in our immediate family were waiting to hear from us! His mom, dad, sisters, brother, my mom, sister, uncle and grandpa…he had talked to them all. They all knew and they kept it a secret. Holy cow!

Once I realized our families knew, I then started thinking about my friends! Scott wanted to take a picture of the ring and post it to Facebook. HECK NO!! My friends were not going to find out over Facebook that I had just got engaged. No way Jose! I wanted to tell them myself. I wanted something special. So, over dinner I started planning a get-together where would would announce our engagement to our group of friends who have known us pretty much since we started dating, some even longer!

We had finished eating and we were talking about getting ice cream and sitting in the park to make phone calls to the family who was waiting to hear from us. Well, our waiter was soooo sweet and brought us a special dessert with CONGRATULATIONS written in chocolate across the top of the plate! Couldn’t let that go to waste…no, no!

After we paid we headed to the park to make phone calls. It was fun talking to everyone (at least the ones we were able to get ahold of) and sharing our “story” with them!

Scott then said he had pre-ordered a bottle of Champagne and it was waiting for us at one of our favorite wine bar, Dell’Uva. Hand in hand we walked down Columbus Street towards the wine bar. I was glowing, I’m sure of it! I had a perma-smile on my face as did Scott. We walked up to the bar and through the doors and all of a sudden I saw my sister, her husband and our friends standing at the bar. They yell SURPRISE as we walked in and again…

*Insert jaw drop*

Shocked!! Surprised beyond belief!! Scott had arranged for our friends to come celebrate with us. The very thing I was trying to plan while we were eating dinner. He knew that I wanted US to tell our friends together, as a couple, as a newly engaged couple! I think I probably stared at them for at least 30 seconds before it all registered! I looked around and I had tears in my eyes. It was so special to me to have them there on this special night.

The night was amazing. Everything about it! I can honestly say I have not been this happy…well, EVER! I am so super excited to be engaged to the most amazing man in the world! He’s not only my boyfriend (now fiance’ hehe), but he’s always my best friend! He really did pull off the perfect engagement!

And, I have the best sister, bro-in-law and friends in the world too! A BIG thank you to those who were able to make it out to celebrate with us! You all mean the world to both Scott and me!

Well, there’s my engagement story…

I have read so many over the years and now it’s my turn! MY TURN! Yipppeee!!

I will leave you with some pictures of my Fiance’ and I! eeeehehehehe

Ann Johnston (mom) - I finally got a chance to check your website after “your big night”. What a neat story you wrote & what a neat way to get engaged. It will be something you will always remember. After reading it I was so proud of Scott to know that I actually raised a son that knows how to treat a nice lady the right way. I am so happy you will be a permanent member of our family. I feel so lucky. Enjoy every moment of planning your special day.
Love, Ann (mom-in-law)
